We believe the desire and ability of the stockperson are key to animal care. When raising pigs without antibiotics, special care for each animal is essential. We monitor our animals’ health and comfort every day.
We believe that housing pigs in crates and stalls is wrong. Pigs are highly social animals and need to interact with each other forming meaningful social groups and bonds. Our maternity wards are designed to allow mothers and piglets to connect. The design of our barns allows our pigs to sleep, eat, and travel about their pens in small groups, or seek privacy when they need it, just as they would in the natural world.
Our pigs are fed food similar to what they would naturally consume. We work with nutritionists to create over 10 different nutritious, vegetarian diets for our pigs to match their age and stage of development. We provide our pigs with access to fresh, clean water at all times.
Our animals’ homes are comfortable in both summer and winter. In summer, they have access to cool floors and walls as well as soothing mists to help them keep cool. In winter, they are provided with supplement heating to prevent feeling cold or chilled.
When our pigs are able to behave naturally, they are more productive and enjoyable to work with.
